Exchanging Experiences

Exchanging Experiences

Extractivism and Society Research Cluster co-coordinators Alejandra Watanabe-Farro (right) and Fernando Leiva (left), met with Prof. Liana Amin Lima da Silva (center) and received copies of her latest book “Autonomous Protocols for Prior Consultation and the Right to Self Determination,” published both in Spanish and Portuguese.

Liana Lima is Professor of Human Rights and Borders in Brazil’s Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados.  Her work focuses on the rights of indigenous peoples, Afro-Brazilian quilombolas and traditional communities in Brazil and Latin America and how they use frameworks sanctioning prior, free, and informed consent and self-determination in socio-environmental conflicts.

She is a co-founder and coordinator of the Observatório de Protocolos Comunitários de Consulta e Consentimento Livre, Prévio e Informado.  They have tracked more than 60 community-created protocols throughout the Americas.

We discussed future joint activities and lines of collaboration between the Observatório and our Extractivism and Society Research Cluster.
